Return to the Alps

I love activities that bring me closer to nature. Cycling in the woods, roller-skating, water-rafting, travelling to explore new terrains, scuba-diving – just the idea of these and other such activities get my senses tingling!

A few days ago I and a group of friends came back from the French Alps. We were rewarded with beautiful weather conditions and got to enjoy that seemingly meditative state of being one with the mountain as we regularly made our way from air quenching 3400m top to the already familiar base while enjoying ever changing awe-inspiring views along the way. There is no way to describe the feeling when you are faced with challenging slopes and your own inhibitions. The more you get to know the mountain, the more you get to know yourself.

Every time I travel I am reminded, nature should be respected, and it is a wonderful teacher.

A number of Ski resorts are already tackling environmental issues by going green. This means: Zero waste, zero carbon, zero net emissions (Whistler Blackcomb); a car-free ski resort, electric buses, re-naturalised/sustainable piste constructions (Zermatt, Switzerland); installation of electric car charging stations (Squaw Valley); investments in renewable, green technologies (Park City Mountain Resort) and more, unfortunately I have not yet noticed any of these in Les Deux Alpes.

Suggestions to help you to plan your holiday:

  • If you are planning your stay in a ski resort and are interested in finding a green B n B or a hotel look no further than TripAdvisor’s Green Leaders programme.
  • Look out for tour operators with an AITO recognised environmental policy. These companies adhere to strict guidelines to reduce their impact on the environment on which they rely.

  • Pick a more adventurous way to reach your destination and avoid flying, take a car or better yet, a train instead!( check out www.seat61.com for more info.)
